Thanks so much to the Bronzeback Bassers Association for having us out for our FIRST event with our OZERO mobile boat decontamination unit!

We had a great time inspecting and decontaminating watercraft and promoting #CleanDrainDry (and also eating pizza🍕)!

🔥DRY your boat and gear before leaving the area where you launched your boat!

On Tuesday, July 30 from 7-9 pm, there will be a free Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) information session at the Best Western in Liverpool.

Mark Whitmore from Cornell University will present their experiences with HWA in the United States. There will also be a panel discussion, updates on HWA, and demonstrations with local experts. In addition, several organizations and businesses will have tables to discuss HWA management and answer questions.

The NSISC will be attending, and we hope to see you there!

☀ The NSISC team was in the field this week collecting invasive species samples!

While visiting Sir Sandford Fleming Park in Halifax Regional Municipality, we found freshwater, terrestrial, and marine invasive species—including Green Crab!

Green Crabs disrupt ecosystems by:
🦀 Predating on native plants and animals, including soft-shell clam, oyster, quahog, and mussel species.
🦀 Uprooting and destroying Eelgrass beds that provide important habitat for native fish, invertebrates, and waterfowl.

To help prevent the spread of this invasive species, remember to practice #CleanDrainDry and #DontLetItLoose. If you spot one, report the location to iNaturalist, or directly to the NSISC.

Not sure if you've found a Green Crab? One of the easiest ways to tell is by the 5 spines on either side of their eyes and 3 spines between their eyes!

We will have the invasive species samples we collected, including the Green Crab pictured, for you to explore at upcoming events! So come and say hello! 👋

Over the past few months, you may have seen shrubs

Over the past few months, you may have seen shrubs with many little white flowers along trails and roadways. Did you know this plant is invasive?

Multiflora Rose grows in long arching canes that can reach up to 3m tall and 4m wide. These plants can grow in various environments and produce abundant seeds, which serve as a food source and are easily spread by birds and other animals. Because it grows so aggressively to form dense thorny thickets, Multiflora Rose can easily outcompete native species for space, light, and nutrients and reduces biodiversity in the areas where it has established.

If you want a beautiful native alternative, go for Virginia Rose instead!

Any item that can retain water, plant fragments, or small organisms can transport aquatic invasive species. To prevent the spread of these species, you can:

🧽CLEAN all items of visible mud, debris, plant fragments, and organisms.

💦DRAIN standing water from all items before leaving the site.

🔥DRY all items completely before using them in another body of water.
