🌟Yarmouth Himalayan Blackberry Removal Pilot Pr

🌟Yarmouth Himalayan Blackberry Removal Pilot Project🌟

Since the discovery of Himalayan blackberry in Nova Scotia, the NSISC has been mapping the presence of this species in collaboration with the Southwest Nova Scotia Biosphere.

From August 20-22, the NSISC led a pilot removal project to test the efficacy of different removal techniques. The above-ground biomass was removed by hand using shears and loppers. Leveraged-based tools, called Extractigators, were then used to pull out the roots. The site will be monitored to determine the effectiveness of the different removal techniques.

This was a huge undertaking, as the plants at the removal site were over 2 metres tall in some areas! But with their hard work and determination, four NSISC members removed 14 full Ford F150XL truck bed loads of Himalayan blackberry material in three days. Well done team! 💪🤩👏

Top Tips:

🪵Many national and provincial parks in Nova Scotia sell firewood on site! If you intend to have a campfire, check if the park you're visiting sells firewood and what payment methods they take before you head out.

🥾Use a boot brush on your shoes and tires before entering and leaving a recreation site to ensure no unwanted travellers hitch a ride in the treads.

👕Go over your clothes, shoes, and gear with a lint roller before leaving a recreation site to get any organisms and debris that may have been missed.

🧼Cleaning also includes laundering your clothes before entering a new recreation site.

🐾Don't forget that invasive species can also be transported on your furry friends! Remember to brush them off before entering and leaving a recreation site.

Staff will be on site:

🛶 Collecting data on the number and types of watercraft entering the province from New Brunswick on the ferry
🚤 Swabbing watercraft for Zebra Mussel EDNA testing
🛶 Decontaminating watercraft to help prevent the spread of Zebra Mussels and other Aquatic Invasive Species into Nova Scotia's waterways
🚤 Educating the public about the importance of Aquatic Invasive Species prevention and how they can help stop the spread

We would like to say a BIG thank you to the volunteers who attended this year's Dog-Strangling Vine weed pull!

With your help and hard work, we filled 8 XXL garbage bags full of DSV! Hooray! We're sure the Monarch Butterflies (who were also in attendance!) will thank you, too! 🌿🥳🦋

The bagged plants will spend the next several weeks 🔥solarizing🔥 (AKA being cooked by the sun to destroy all the viable plant material, like seeds and root crowns) before being properly disposed of to avoid further spread through the municipal waste system 🌞🙌
